“To my sponsors: Don Scott Law Office, Allure Medi Spa, Velenzia Fashion, Achieve Wellness Spa, Pyramid Dental and Pretty N Polished Nailz… You are my wings!”
The competition has come and gone and I am settling back into normal life at home. I have to say that pageant withdrawals can make even my most exciting day on set feel like a lazy sunday. I was sick with tonsillitis and honestly couldn’t handle the swings of getting energy and losing energy, but those first couple of days are still amazing even through the sickness. Nothing compares to the constant buzz in the air of being at competition.
“The Golden Girls”- Mina, myself and Victoria! We instantly bonded and shared fashion inspo daily! Love and miss these girls! This is day one at Toula’s Restaurant and Bar (seriously eat here if you are in Toronto, such good food and with a view!)
Me and Shanelle! Love this woman so much! Also a blogger! Check her out here:http://shanelleconnell.com
I miss my pageant girls! I miss days of activities, chatting with like minded people, rehearsals, bonding over sore feet. You know the usual pageant past times! Most importantly I actually miss the prep. It was my third consecutive year competing, and prep time had begun to feel like a routine for me. Wake up, meditate, stretch, eat, complete any work for the day and planning for the pageant, workout and then plan more. I’m obviously in a secluded area so prep was always alone and at the most on Skype if it was with professional help (thanks Sierra!). Now that there is no prep time scheduled, I find myself fangirling all the Miss Universe events and activities leading up to the final. Only 16 more days!!!
“I feel like sometimes the crown you wear regardless of actually winning, is in fact invisible”
The competition always makes me reflect on myself and how much I have changed and evolved since starting to compete. Although I haven’t won, competing has done wonders for my organizational and planning skills. I’m confident in myself to complete any task. I learnt to time manage and budget. All great qualities to build. I’ve made connections and furthered my career in so many different directions. Holding down a job in media and in the non for profit sector. I worked with the United Nations Association of Canada and also was honoured for my humanitarian contributions to society. Not to mention that I was able to fundraise $4431.10 for Operation Smile and that is close to one thirteenth of the total amount that the Miss Universe Canada delegates fundraised. I think that my community and I did good! I feel like sometimes the crown you wear regardless of actually winning, is in fact invisible.
But onto the woman who did win and some very interesting questions I get asked every year. No we do not fight, delegates are not catty and mean. And no the winners are definitely not rich and full of themselves. They are down to earth, nice people like you and me. The watch TV, sleep in, don’t wear makeup on sundays and don’t always follow their best diet. Surprise, they are human! Lauren Howe was the winner of this year’s 2017 title and she was one of the most chill people I have ever met! When you talk to her you know she is genuinely super sweet and herself. Paola and Sierra were just the same and we really cannot ever have enough good women role models in society. So although I didn’t win and it was sad for a lot of people who deeply support me and know how important the competition is to me, I’m still happy someone I am proud to know, did win.
For those who did support me, you are the whole reason I am able to get to the level I achieved. To everyone who supports my charity events, you are so kind to open up your evening and your wallets for a cause that is so worth every penny! Your support and want to make an impact with me is why I promote humanitarian work and volunteering with this competition! It’s why I get excited to fly every year to Toronto to compete for my dream. A platform that would help me take flight to so many new levels. To my friends, family and coworkers who understand my routines and habits that keep my positive and focused, you are the wind under my wings! To my sponsors: Don Scott Law Office, Allure Medi Spa, Velenzia Fashion, Achieve Wellness Spa, Pyramid Dental and Pretty N Polished Nailz… You are my wings! Nothing can replace the feeling of being utterly supported by your community when it’s something you have dreamed about since you were a child!
I wish Lauren good luck at the 2017 Miss Universe competition and hope that she has a fantastic time! And I will be watching and cheering you on from home!
